Being always voted as one of the world’s top travel destination, Milford Sound is the most sought out attraction for anyone visiting the south island. It is a Marine life reserve, a UNESCO world heritage site and a true natural wonder. Initially it seems like a huge lake surrounded by mountains but when you go deep it meets the open sea, mountains appear to come straight out of the ocean.
To reach Milford sound you need to travel around four hours by bus from Queenstown. I will advice tourists not to drive on this road as the terrain is too rugged, roads are not good and it always rains. You can take a day tour from Queenstown which will not only take care of the travel but also the cruise tickets once you reach the place. We took a day tour from Jucy. Another option is staying at Te Anau and then visiting the place next day. Te Anau is halfway between Queenstown and Milford Sound, thus the travel is less hectic. we travelled four hours to reach the place, was there for two hours and then returned four hours, yet I will say it was worth the pain. Firstly because it is a natural spectacle to see thousands of water fall trickling down the huge mountains and secondly the road from Te Anau to Milford Sound is spectacular.
The Snow capped mountains has innumerable water stream flowing down to form a mountain river which flows along the side of the road. At regular intervals the river broaden to form a lake like water body. It is one of those very few places where tourists pray for rain because the more it rains better the waterfalls get. On our day trip it rained and to our luck it was sunny when we were on the cruise. If you are luckier you can see Dolphins, we saw a few seals basking in the sun.
The best part of visiting Milford sound was when the cruise moved into one of the huge water fall and we were soaked with icy cold water. Sunlight shimmering over the vast waterbody surrounded by the huge mountains coming straight out of the water surface is an amazing spectacle.
