When people plan their trip to New Zealand, very few think of this gem, the blue water pools near the city of Wanaka. You will have to drive about 80 KMs through the southern Alps from the city of Wanaka to reach the on road parking which says “Blue water pools”. Fifteen minute walk from there and you reach a paradise in isolation.
We visited the place while travelling from Franz Josef to Queenstown, it was nearly 600 km drive and we have already stopped at a dozen of view points. The pools are half way between the two cities and when we saw the not so interesting parking we thought of skipping it. Also it was a 30 min walk which supported our not to “visit the place” verdict but may be the large number of parked vehicles tempted us to stop by. Bang – We are proud of our decision 🙂 .
We will say to everyone don’t miss it, don’t drive through in a hurry or under estimate that it will same as all blue water bodies you have seen all across New Zealand. It is kind of epic, it is really neon Blue water. It is neither still nor flowing too fast, it defines tranquility. At the shore the place is filled with oval-flat rocks which people have stacked together to give a meditative posture. You can try your luck at throwing the pebbles really flat to see them bouncing off the water surface.
To reach the place you need to cross two hanging bridges with blue water flowing beneath. For us this place will easily compete for number three position of all the places we visited in New Zealand, First being Queenstown followed by Milford sound.
